Police in Dominican Republic find country's first cocaine processing lab, arrest 2 Colombians

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have uncovered an underground cocaine processing lab that is being described as the most sophisticated ever found in the Caribbean.

Dominican Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito said Monday that the lab was hidden underneath a grove of fruit trees on a ranch in San Cristobal, to the west of Santo Domingo.

Police found the lab while searching the property on Sunday. They recovered 225 kilograms of the base ingredient in cocaine.

Two Colombians had been arrested at the property about a week earlier on drug charges.

The Dominican Republic has seized record amounts of cocaine for each of the past three years.
