The mayor of a Rwandan town on the border with Congo says rockets have landed inside Rwandan territory, killing a woman and her baby.

Rubavu Sheik Hassan Barame said the rocket landed in a market area Thursday morning in the town of Rubavu, which lies on Lake Kivu and borders the Congolese town of Goma.

Rwanda's military spokesman, Brig. Gen. Joseph Nzambamwita, said the government would soon issue a statement over the border violence.

Goma, a city of 1 million, briefly fell to the M23 rebels last year. M23 said in a statement Thursday that the shells being fired into Rwandan territory was a deliberate attempt to draw Rwanda into the fighting taking place in Congo between government and U.N. troops against the rebels.
