TORONTO – Two men accused of plotting to derail a train in Canada with support from al-Qaida have appeared in court before they discuss their case with a judge next month.
Chiheb Esseghaier and Raed Jaser appeared in a Toronto courtroom via video link Monday.
The men were arrested in April in connection with a plot to derail a Via passenger train running between New York City and Montreal. Police said it was the first known attack planned by al-Qaida in Canada.
Esseghaier will represent himself. He does not have a lawyer because he insists his case be based on the Quran, not Canada's Criminal Code.
They'll be in court Sept. 23. If convicted, they could face life in prison.
