The Pakistani military has accused Indian troops of carrying out a new round of shelling along the disputed Kashmir border, killing a civilian.

A Pakistani military official says Sakhi Muhammad was killed Tuesday night in the Battal sector of Pakistan-held Kashmir. The official says a female civilian, whom it identified only as Nabeela, was wounded.

The official spoke anonymously Wednesday in line with military policy.

Indian officials did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Violence has flared along the Kashmir border over the last week, threatening to sabotage efforts to improve relations between the two countries.

Kashmir is divided between Pakistan and India and claimed in its entirety by both. The countries have fought two major wars over the disputed territory since they gained independence from Britain in 1947.
