Did one "Shark Week" fan take things too far?
Just after midnight Wednesday, a small dead shark was found aboard a New York City subway train.
New York City's Transit Authority said the conductor asked passengers to leave the car and closed it off. The N train continued to the end of the line, and then a supervisor placed the shark in a garbage bag and put it in the trash.
The blog Gothamist published photos of the subway shark. Appearing to be about 4 feet long, in one image the shark has a cigarette in its mouth with a subway fare card and Red Bull can nearby.
The tipster, a woman known as “Mary M” who sent in the first photos, told Gothamist that when she first boarded the subway car a stench hit her nose.
“It's not the typical urine/trash smell, it's...fishy? I look down to the end of the car to see a dead shark on the floor. I think I stood there for a good minute just staring, thinking 'Is this for real?! Oh come ON, NYC!' One of my fellow passengers remarked 'I've been riding the subway for 15 years, and this is the weirdest thing I've seen. And I've seen EVERYTHING.'”
Transit officials say they were aware of the photos but are making no effort to find the person who posted them. The transit authority says it has "better things to do."
