BARCELONA (AFP) – Japan's Daiya Seto claimed gold in the men's 400m individual medley at the swimming world championships on Sunday with American Chase Kalisz in second and Brazil's Thiago Pereira in third.
The 19-year-old powered home in the last 50 metres to clock at time of 4min 08.69 secs with Kalisz at 0.53 and Pereira at 0.79.
With double defending world champion Ryan Lochte opting not to take part in the event, the race seemed wide open before the start and so it proved.
Japan's other teen sensation, Kosuke Hagino, who already has two silver medals to his name in Barcelona, looked set for a first gold with 100m remaining.
However, as Hagino floundered, Seto moved through the gears to take victory with Kalisz and Pereira also coming past Hagino to take their place on the podium.
