BELFAST, Northern Ireland – The topThat appeals court has ruled that the most notorious Protestant militant of Northern Ireland's conflict, Michael Stone, must serve his full 30-year prison sentence for attacking an IRA funeral.
Monday's judgment means the 58-year-old cannot be considered for parole until 2024, when he will be 69.
Stone became a celebrated figure among Protestant extremists when he launched a solo gun-and-grenade attack on an Irish Republican Army funeral in 1988.
He was convicted of three murders committed that day as well as the murders of three Catholic civilians in earlier attacks.
Stone was freed from his sentence in 2000 as part of the Good Friday peace accord. But Britain sent him sent back to prison in 2006 after he tried to kill leaders of the Irish nationalist Sinn Fein party.
