ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast – A top International Criminal Court says she traveled to Ivory Coast to strengthen her office's case against former President Laurent Gbagbo, who has been accused of crimes against humanity in the country's 2010-11 postelection conflict.
ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda told reporters in Abidjan Friday that she was gathering more evidence against Gbagbo, whose refusal to cede office after the November 2010 election plunged the country into violence that claimed at least 3,000 lives.
Last month, ICC judges ruled that Bensouda's evidence was not strong enough to confirm the charges against Gbagbo, giving her until mid-November to produce more.
Bensouda has also unsealed an arrest warrant for Gbagbo's wife, Simone, but President Alassane Ouattara's government has yet to announce whether it will approve her transfer to The Hague.
