Sun Media announced Tuesday it is closing eight small-town newspapers across Canada and three of its free urban dailies, as it shifts to meet growing demand for online news.
"The downsizing is necessary to maintain a strong positioning for our news media outlets on all platforms, and more broadly to secure our corporation's future success in an industry that is being revolutionized by the advent of digital," said Julie Tremblay, the media company's chief operating officer.
"Digital is more than a strong trend," she said. "Today, young people are getting their information almost exclusively from digital sources such as computers, smartphones and tablets."
The closures of the 24 Hours newspapers in Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton, Quebec's L'Action Regionale in Monteregie, Le Magazine Saint-Lambert and Le Progr??s de Bellechasse, as well as The Lindsay Daily Post and The Midland Free Press in Ontario, The Meadow Lake Progress in Saskatchewan, and Manitoba's The Lac du Bonnet Leader and The Beausejour Review will result in 360 job losses.
But it will save the company Can$55 million annually, it said.
Meanwhile Tremblay said the Quebecor Media subsidiary would beef up its online delivery of news and other content from its remaining 36 paid-circulation daily newspapers and 3 free dailies, and almost 200 community newspapers, shopping guides and other specialty publications.
