Egyptian spokesmen say troops and police guarding the Republican Guard complex came under "heavy gunfire" early Monday, killing two policemen and an army officer. The ensuing violence also left 42 protesters killed, according to other officials.

The police and army spokesmen spoke at a press conference giving their version of early-morning clashes in Cairo.

Army Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali says another 42 troops were injured, including 8 in a critical condition.
