Jamaica air traffic controllers stay home; most flights operate normally as managers step in

Published January 13, 2015

Air traffic supervisors have been monitoring flights to and from Jamaica because controllers are calling in sick over a pay dispute with management.

The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority announced Sunday that more than 40 air traffic controllers have called in sick at the island's two international airports and the Kingston Air Traffic Control Center since Saturday. Authority spokeswoman Nicole Robinson says "safety is not compromised" as a contingency team of supervisors covers the shifts.

At Norman Manley International Airport in the capital of Kingston, travelers calmly waited for flights near the ticketing counters Sunday morning.

Most routes were operating on schedule, but passengers waiting for Fly Jamaica's morning trip to New York said their flight was being delayed for some eight hours due to the sickout.
