Greek coalition crisis talks on state TV closure collapse, threatening government

ATHENS, Greece – The fate of Greece's shaky coalition government is hanging in the balance after talks over the closure of state TV collapsed.

Conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' surprise move last week to shut down state ERT broadcaster to save money sparked protests in Greece and abroad, and angered both his center-left allies.

Junior coalition party leader Fotis Kouvelis said "no common political ground" was found late Thursday, during a third crisis meeting this week.

Kouvelis is holding urgent talks with senior officials from his Democratic Left party. It and Socialist Pasok are the two minority partners in the conservative-led government.

Speaking after Thursday's meeting with Samaras, Pasok leader Evangelos Venizelos said Greece's situation is now "particularly crucial" and "there is an issue regarding the very existence and prospects of the government."
