Brazilian police have arrested a teenage girl on charges of killing her mother for trying to stop her from dating her boyfriend.

The Rio de Janeiro police department says in a Thursday statement that officers believe the 17-year-old girl struck her mother on the head before asphyxiating her with a plastic bag on May 25.

Officers also arrested the girl's 21-year-old boyfriend on suspicion of helping her take the mother's body to a barren plot of land and burn it.

Police say the couple confessed to the killing, and said they hoped to receive the 15,000 real ($7,500) from the mother's life insurance policy that listed the daughter as beneficiary.
