LISBON, Portugal – Portugal's minister for parliamentary affairs has resigned after months of allegations he received favorable treatment to obtain a university degree in the space of one year.
The prime minister's office said Miguel Relvas presented his resignation Thursday and it was accepted.
Relvas is the first member of the center-right coalition government to quit since it took office almost two years ago. He has been a close adviser to Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho.
Relvas said in a statement that he was resigning because he didn't have the "emotional strength" to continue.
Relvas, 51, graduated with a degree in political science from Lisbon's Universidade Lusofona in 2007. He started the course the previous year.
After media investigations questioned his qualifications, the Education Ministry began investigating. Findings are expected this month.
