Venezuelan authorities are investigating the shooting death of an Indian chief who campaigned for the demarcation of native lands.

Information Minister Ernesto Villegas says Sabino Romero was fatally shot on a highway in the western state of Zulia.

Villegas said Monday that investigators suspect Romero may have been the victim of a hired killing, but officials have not yet determined a motive.

No arrests have been made following Romero's Sunday night slaying.

Romero had long been campaigning for the rights of his Yukpa tribe and the demarcation of their lands in the Perija mountain range bordering neighboring Colombia.
