Police say the third victim of an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands has died in a hospital.

Authorities say the man, who has not been identified, died of his injuries Friday morning. He had been in critical condition overnight after being pulled from the snow following Thursday afternoon's avalanche.

Emergency services responded to the avalanche in the Cairngorm mountains and airlifted all three victims — two men and a woman — for emergency treatment, but were unable to save them.

Avalanches in the area are not uncommon. The event Thursday was the third dangerous avalanche in the highlands this winter.

Officials urged hikers to take extra precautions and make sure they have proper equipment to cope with emergencies.
