Authorities in the Mexican state of Jalisco say DNA tests have revealed that a girl who gave birth two weeks ago is between 12 and 13 years of age, not 9 as the parents had claimed.

Jalisco state prosecutors also say the girl, called Dafne, was impregnated by her stepfather and not her alleged 17-year-old boyfriend.

The stepfather, 44-year-old Abundio García, turned him in Thursday morning to the Attorney General’s Office. It's unclear what charges he will face, according to a report by Noticieros Televisa.

In an interview with the local media, García admitted that he had intercourse with the minor twice while his wife was at work covering an 8-hour afternoon shift.

In a statement to the authorities, he said that the girl's mother, who is 38 years old, learned about the pregnancy when her daughter was 7 months into it and apparently was oblivious of who was the father.

García apologized to the girl and said he was aware that he deserves to be punished.

Under the Jalisco’s Criminal Code, rape carries an 18-year prison sentence if the victim is 10 years old or younger.

The girls' parents didn't have a birth certificate for her and initially told authorities she was 9.
