As Sonia Sotomayor tours the country promoting her book, a women’s event for her alma mater seemed pretty standard.
But the the Puerto Rican Supreme Court Justice has come under fire for her involvement in a conference for female Yale graduates because the event is being sponsored by PepsiCo.
Some of the school’s alumni, according to the New York Times, are upset at the connection between the school and the beverage company. Their main issue seems to be what is perceived as Yale‘s endorsing PepsiCo’s sugary drinks at a time when obesity and childhood obesity are considered a national problem.
The Ivy League University has a graduate fellowship at the School of Medicine funded by PepsiCo and the company has a New Haven lab near the University.
PepsiCo’s CEO, Indra Nooyi, is a Yale trustee and has a master’s degree from the institution.
“The very idea that [Sotomayor] would be headlining a Pepsi event is shocking,” Louise Harpman, a Yale alumni told the Times.
Sotomayor, one of the nation’s most prominent Latinos, has diabetes a condition often linked to sugary sodas.
The event in will be held in Washington, D.C. April 19 through the 20th.
PepsiCo stands by their sponsorship and the Supreme Court said her appearance does not appear as an endorsement of Pepsi.
