JOHANNESBURG – A military spokesman says two soldiers were killed in a shootout in Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta involving a vessel operated by an Indian company.
Lt. Col. Onyema Nwachukwu said the attack happened Tuesday in Bayelsa state in the Niger Delta. Nwachukwu said the soldiers were guarding a vessel operated by Sterling Global Oil Resources Ltd., a venture of an India-based company called the Sandesara Group.
Nwachukwu said additional patrol boats had arrived to the area. He said he did not know if any civilians were injured in the attack.
Criminal gangs and militant groups target foreign oil companies working in the Niger Delta, despite the signing of a 2009 amnesty deal. Some also steal oil from pipelines in the region and attack commercial tankers in the region.
