An editor of a Somali radio station says unknown gunmen have shot dead a Somali journalist, the first journalist to be killed this year. Eighteen were killed last year, making Somalia one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists.

Mohamed Bashir Hashi, the editor for Shabelle radio, said Friday two gunmen shot dead Abdihared Osman Aden, a producer with the station. Hashi says Aden was killed in Mogadishu, the capital.

Somali journalists say that impunity is fueling the killings. The National Union of Somali Journalists said in November that journalists in almost every region of the country commonly face harassment, blackmail and arbitrary police detention. In addition, criminals are hired to suppress them.
