A family spokesman says former longtime Puerto Rico Police Superintendent Pedro Toledo has died.

Spokesman Stephen Alvarez says in a statement that Toledo died Sunday at a hospital in San Juan after suffering a cardiac arrest. The former FBI agent who served two governors as the island's police chief was 69.

Toledo served as the top police official for the U.S. island territory from 1993-2000 under Gov. Pedro Rossello and from 2005-2009 under Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila. Both periods in which the U.S. island territory struggled with high crime. Toledo was a popular figure on the island, reflected by the fact that he was appointed superintendent by governors of rival political parties.

A wake was planned for Wednesday.
