Bomb explodes outside Athens home of Greek criminal prosecutor

ATHENS, Greece – Police say a bomb has exploded outside the Athens home of a criminal prosecutor, causing damage to the house, nearby buildings and cars but no injuries.

The Thursday attack happened outside the house of prosecutor Paraskevi Kalaitzi, best known in Greece for trying the case of an organized crime ring convicted of several offenses, including the murder of a businessman and the kidnapping of a Greek shipowner.

The shipowner, Periklis Panagopoulos, was kidnapped in January 2009 and held for eight days until his family paid a ransom.

Eighteen people were convicted in the organized crime trial, which lasted 18 months and ended in March 2012. Two of those convicted were sentenced to double life terms. Other sentences ranged from seven years to life.
