Iraqi president heads to Kurdish area over tensions between Kurds and central government

BAGHDAD – A senior official says Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has headed to the Kurdish autonomous region to calm tensions after clashes between Kurdish and Iraqi forces.

The official says Talabani met on Monday with the leader of the autonomous region, Massoud Barzani. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, because he wasn't authorized to brief reporters.

The clashes, which killed one civilian, erupted Friday in the town of Tuz Khormato, claimed by Iraqi Arabs, Turkomen and Kurds.

Iraq's central government and Kurds have had heated disputes over land, oil and power sharing since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.

Tensions have since flared after Iraq's central government last month formed a military command for areas bordering the Kurdish region, including disputed areas.
