Venezuela's opposition leaders are calling on President Hugo Chavez to grant amnesty to the country's self-proclaimed political prisoners.

Opposition congressman Edgar Zambrano is spearheading the initiative backed by relatives of imprisoned government adversaries and numerous political parties.

Zambrano believes Chavez is open to the possibility of holding talks on the issue. He says the president appears willing to liberate some of his opponents and allow others to return to Venezuela from exile.

The congressman says he hopes the proposed amnesty bill he recently introduced in the National Assembly will provide the framework for an agreement.
