The prime ministers of the Czech Republic and Iraq say their countries are negotiating a possible deal for the Iraqi military to acquire Czech-made subsonic L-159 military airplanes.

Speaking after meeting his Iraqi counterpart Nouri al-Maliki, Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas said Wednesday the defense ministers are set to discuss details.

Czech Defense Minister Alexandr Vondra says his country could sell up to 28 of the light combat and training planes.

Vondra says it is not clear when a deal can be struck.

Al-Maliki said technical details still have to be worked out. He said Iraq also has an offer from the United States and has to decide which planes would be better for his country.
