NIAMEY, Niger – Niger's Interior minister says that some of the international aid intended for the victims of recent floods in Niger has been stolen.
Abdou Labo told reporters Saturday that "at several of the sites where we are housing displaced people, we have determined that the food aid and the products (sent there) did not arrive in their entirety."
Niger consistently ranks as one of the poorest countries in the world. Torrential rains have caused flooding, killing over 60 people. Millions of dollars of aid has been sent to Niger to help flood victims and to run feeding centers for malnourished children.
A case in point is the neighborhood of Lamorde in Niamey, where resident Dodo Jafarou said that of the 30 tons of cereals that were sent, only 10 arrived.
