Lawyers for two Kenyan men charged with crimes against humanity for allegedly orchestrating violence after Kenya's disputed 2007 elections have asked the International Criminal Court to start their trials as quickly as possible.

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, plans to stand in presidential elections tentatively scheduled for March 4, 2013.

Lawyer Karim Khan said Tuesday that Francis Muthaura, a retired head of the country's civil service, wants "to remove this stain that this case spilled on his character as soon as possible."

The men, allies of President Mwai Kibaki, say they are innocent of charges including murder, forcible deportations and persecution of supporters of Prime Minster Raila Odinga after the 2007 elections.

Prosecutors want a trial by March. Judges at the Hague, Netherlands-based court will set a date July 13.
