Tornadoes Slam Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Pelted with Baseball-Sized Hail

Strong storms hit the lower 48 states yesterday, producing over 220 reports of severe weather from the Plains to the Southeast.

Eighteen tornadoes were reported, all of them from the Dallas-Fort Worth area into Northeastern Texas. Baseball-size hail caused damage to airplanes at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, forcing hundreds of cancellations even through Wednesday.

And the threat for more is not over yet…

There’s another chance for severe thunderstorms from Louisiana up into Eastern Kansas, and east to Virginia.

Damaging wind gusts of 58 mph or greater, large hail (1-inch in diameter or greater) and isolated tornadoes will be possible.

As the storm crawls east, more severe weather will be possible tomorrow from New Orleans to Tallahassee, Fla.

Aside from damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes, many of these storms can produce dangerous lightning and localized flooding.

Make sure to remain alert if you live in these areas and have a plan ready to put into action should a tornado warning be issued for your county.

A tornado warning means that a tornado can be on the ground shortly, if not already, and you should seek shelter immediately, preferably in a basement.

If you do not have a basement, try to stay away from windows, and go to an interior room, on the lowest floor of your home.

The weather will remain relatively calm in the Dallas area over the next few days, which should help clean up efforts.
