Authorities say an American teacher has been killed in an apparent murder-suicide in a school in the Kurdish region in northern Iraq.

Local police spokesman Sarkawit Mohammed says a student opened fire on a sports teacher on Thursday in a private school in the city of Sulaimaniyah.

Mohammed says the student then shot himself, and died later at a hospital.

The shooter was identified as 18-year-old Biyar Sarwar. The Associated Press is withholding the name of the American teacher pending notification of next of kin.

Sulaimaniyah is located in Iraq's comparatively peaceful Kurdish region, 160 miles northeast of Baghdad.

Sulaimaniyah mayor Zana Hama Saleh confirmed the attack but did not know the motive for it.
