BOGOTA, Colombia – Colombia's solicitor general has suspended Bogota's mayor from office for three months for alleged negligence in overseeing public contracts.
The suspension of Mayor Samuel Moreno comes less than a week after his senator brother, Ivan, was arrested on influence-pedding charges. He is accused of soliciting payments from construction companies that won major municipal road-building contracts.
Mayor Moreno did not immediately comment on Tuesday's order by Solicitor General Alejandro Ordonez, who said it was not a sentence but a preventive measure.
Colombia's solicitor general can by law fire public officials and bar them from office.
A criminal investigation is ongoing and President Juan Manuel Santos must now name an acting mayor.
