COPENHAGEN, Denmark – The Little Mermaid is back in town after six months in China.
The 5-foot (1.5 meter) statue — Copenhagen's most famous landmark — left Denmark for the first time in its 97-year history in April to become the centerpiece of the Danish pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai.
The move was controversial in Denmark, where some considered it disrespectful to ship a cultural treasure across the globe as a public relations tool.
Bo Asmus Kjeldgaard, a Copenhagen mayor, said Thursday the mermaid has now returned to Denmark safely and will be placed back on her perch in the harbor on Nov. 20.
Unveiled in 1913, the bronze was inspired by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale about a mermaid who falls in love with a prince and must wait 300 years to become human.
