STOCKHOLM -- Government officials say that American surveillance activities have taken place in Sweden without the knowledge of the nation's authorities.
Justice Minister Beatrice Ask says the activities "seem to be similar" to those unveiled in Norway earlier this week -- photographing and gathering information about individuals for surveillance and security purposes.
Swedish authorities "don't seem to have been informed" of the operations, and are still not aware of the scope.
Ask says the monitoring has been performed since 2000, and that the information has been sent to the U.S. It is not clear whether Swedish law has been violated.
The Foreign Ministry on Saturday met with the U.S. Ambassador to Sweden in connection with the surveillance.
