LONDON (AP) — Buckingham Palace says Prince Charles will visit the community in northern England where a shooting rampage claimed 12 lives last week.

The palace says the prince hopes to show support and sympathy for the victims of 52-year-old Derrick Bird, who killed many as he drove across rural Cumbria and fired shots out of his car.

It was Britain's worst mass shooting in more than a decade and shocked a country where firearms are tightly controlled and gun crime is rare.

Memorial services were held Wednesday across Cumbria and the first funeral is planned for Thursday.

The prince is thought to be particularly attached to Cumbria, a mountainous, lake-dotted county which he visits every year.
