2 UN peacekeepers wounded by mortar fire from Syria in Golan Heights

Published May 21, 2015

Associated Press

The Israeli military says two U.N. peacekeepers in the Golan Heights have been wounded by mortar fire from neighboring Syria.

The military says the peacekeepers were hit at a U.N. base in the Israeli-controlled part of the Golan. It says they were taken to an Israeli hospital, but gives no details on their condition or nationality.

It said the mortar fire was believed to be errant spillover from fighting in the Syrian civil war.

Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war.

U.N. peacekeepers have patrolled the area for more than four decades.
