W.Va. State Police: Structures burning, Interstate 77 closed after major gas line explosion

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

West Virginia State Police say a gas pipeline explosion has left several structures on fire and shut about a mile of Interstate 77 in both directions near Sissonville.

Sgt. Michael Baylous says it's unclear whether anyone has been hurt.

The explosion occurred around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, and firefighters and other first responders were rushing to the scene. Kanawha County emergency officials said crews are working to shut off the pipeline.

Baylous said few further details were available about the explosion.

Sissonville is about 15 miles north of the state capital, Charleston.
