Verdict reached in trial of former Fullerton police officers charged with killing homeless man

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

An Orange County jury has reached a verdict in the trial of two former Fullerton police officers charged with killing a homeless man.

Authorities say the verdict will be read at about 4 p.m. PST.

Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli are charged with the 2011 death of 37-year-old Kelly Thomas, who died at a hospital after a violent struggle with police that was captured on videotape.

The 33-minute video showed six officers striking Thomas with their fists and knees, and shocking him with a Taser as he cried out for his father nearly 30 times.

A county pathologist concluded that Thomas died, in part, from a lack of oxygen to the brain caused by injuries received during the confrontation.

Ramos has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Cicinelli has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and use of excessive force.
