Surgeons reattach ear of Buffalo officer hit by gunfire

Published May 23, 2017

Associated Press

Surgeons have reattached a Buffalo police officer's ear after it was nearly shot off by a man who pulled out a gun during a traffic stop. The man was then fatally shot by another officer.

Buffalo police officials say Officer Joseph Acquino is in fair condition at Erie County Medical Center, where his ear was surgically reattached Sunday night.

Authorities say Acquino and his partner had pulled over 26-year-old Jose Hernandez-Rossy earlier Sunday for a traffic violation. Officials say he became combative and began struggling with the officers.

Police say Hernandez-Rossy fired a gun, grazing Acquino's ear. Officer Justin Tedesco then shot Hernandez-Rossy, who was found several blocks away suffering from wounds to his upper arm and shoulder. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
