Canadian police are investigating the shooting death of an American man who had been hunting for bear in northern British Columbia.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were called Monday to a forest service area about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Houston, British Columbia, where they found the body of a 59-year-old Washington State man.

Police say the man had been hunting with the help of guides.

Sgt. Stephen Rose says the victim has been identified but his name and other details are not being released.

With the help of authorities in Washington state, police say the family of the man has been notified about his death.

The coroners service is also investigating.
