Police cite alleged trespassers near Washington headquarters

Published June 27, 2016

Associated Press

Police in Maryland issued criminal citations to seven people they say were trespassing at a gazebo next to a cabin that once served as George Washington's headquarters.

Police say in a news release that the Riverside Park location has in recent weeks been the scene of complaints about drinking, disturbances and fights.

Cumberland Police officers patrolling the area Sunday during the hours it's closed found visitors there. They issued citations to six Cumberland residents and a resident of Flintstone, accusing them of trespassing on posted property.

The city of Cumberland owns the property. Signs bar trespassing between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

The cabin was Washington's headquarters during the French and Indian War.
