Officials: Man dies in shooting with North Carolina deputies

Published August 09, 2016

Associated Press

Authorities in North Carolina are investigating after they say a man died after exchanging gunfire with deputies.

Wilkes County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy David Carson tells news outlets in a news release that 64-year-old James Eugene Burgess was pronounced dead at the scene Monday night in Wilkesboro.

Investigators say deputies responding to a home for a report of shots fired encountered Burgess who began firing at deputies. Deputies then returned the fire and Burgess retreated.

Authorities say Burgess was found lying near the home. He had what appeared to be at least one gunshot wound to the chest.

Deputies say it's unclear who fired the gunshot that caused Burgess' death. No deputies were injured.

Burgess is the father of a Wilkes County Deputy Sheriff, who wasn't involved in the incident.
