New homeland security secretary warns of threat to US from Syria's civil war

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

New Homeland Security Secretary Jeh (jay) Johnson says the civil war in Syria has become a matter of U.S. homeland security.

In his first major speech since being sworn in last month, Johnson said Syria was a chief topic in meetings this week in Poland with law enforcement and security officials around Western Europe. He says he and others are focused on foreign fighters from the U.S., Canada and Europe fighting in the civil war in Syria.

Johnson says he's also concerned about threats from self-radicalized people who may try to target the United States.

In the wide-ranging speech, Johnson also called for what he described as commonsense solutions to the immigration problem and says that immigration reform also is a matter of homeland security.
