July 11, 2001: Then-Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif., leaves his Washington apartment.

Former California Congressman Gary Condit says he thought police were prying into personal life when they first interviewed him about Chandra Levy's disappearance.

Condit took the stand Monday in the murder trial of Ingmar Guandique, who is on trial for the murder and attempted sexual assault of Levy nearly a decade ago.

Condit says he thought his first meeting with police was going to be about how seriously they were taking the investigation. He realized they considered him a suspect when a detective asked him if he had a sexual relationship with Levy.

Condit said he responded: "If you can tell me why that's relevant, I can answer the question." He said the detective never responded and the interview ended.
