Ex-Oklahoma officer asks for new trial on rape, sex crimes

A former Oklahoma City police officer convicted of raping and sexually victimizing eight women while on duty has filed a request for a new trial on the eve of his sentencing.

Attorney Scott Adams filed the request on behalf of former police officer Daniel Holtzclaw late Wednesday. A sentencing hearing for the 29-year-old is scheduled for Thursday.

The request asks for either a new trial or an evidentiary hearing. A phone call to Adams was not immediately returned late Wednesday.

A jury convicted Holtzclaw last month on 18 charges and acquitted him on 18 other charges. A judge is slated to decide whether Holtzclaw would serve up to 263 years consecutively.

The Associated Press highlighted Holtzclaw's case in an investigation of sexual misconduct by law officers.
