Central Florida prosecutor Wolfinger dies from cancer

The former central Florida prosecutor who recused himself from the George Zimmerman case, has died. He was 70.

State Attorney's Office spokeswoman Lynne Bumpus-Hooper says Norm Wolfinger had been battling bone marrow cancer. He died Tuesday.

Wolfinger is best known on the national stage for having recused himself from the Zimmerman case in 2012. Gov. Rick Scott appointed special prosecutor Angela Corey to pursue the case.

Zimmerman was acquitted in 2013 of fatally shooting Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old. That case sparked protests and a debate about race relations.

Wolfinger's office also prosecuted William Cruse for a massacre at two shopping centers in 1987.

Wolfinger was first elected State Attorney in 1984. He served in that job until he decided in 2012 not to seek another term.
