British man convicted in shoe bomb plot allowed to testify at trial of bin Laden's son-in-law

A judge says a man convicted in the United Kingdom in the 2001 shoe bomb plot can testify through a video link at the terrorism trial of Osama bin Laden's son-in-law and former spokesman.

Federal Judge Lewis Kaplan made the ruling Wednesday on a request by prosecutors. He also ruled that defense lawyers can obtain a videotaped deposition from a man in Yemen who is believed to have been bin Laden's driver from 1998 until November 2001.

The testimony will be used at the trial next month of Sulaiman Abu Ghaith (SOO'-lay-mahn AH'-boo GAYTH). Abu Ghaith has pleaded not guilty to charges that he conspired to kill Americans in his role as al-Qaida's spokesman after the Sept. 11 attacks. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
