South Carolina officer demoted for sending mocking video

Published March 31, 2017

Associated Press

A South Carolina police officer has been demoted to a civilian position after authorities say he shared a video that mocked black people with a blogger.

News outlets report that internal affairs documents show 38-year-old David Winslette was demoted from a North Charleston patrolman to community service officer with a 10 percent pay cut March 2 after an investigation.

The investigation determined Winslette, who is white, sent the private Facebook message in 2014.

When confronted by investigators, Winslette said he did not recall sending the video and that he didn't know what events he might have been referencing, but he did not deny sending the message.

North Charleston police would not discuss the case.

Charleston attorney Andy Savage says there is nothing in Winslette's record to indicate he holds any racial hatred.
