A correctional officer and an inmate are dead following a brief altercation at a Pennsylvania prison.
It happened Monday night at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre (WILKS'-ba-ree).
Luzerne County Manager David Pedri confirmed the deaths at a news conference late Monday.
Pedri declined to comment on what led to the altercation or how the two died.
Officials have identified the inmate as 27-year-old Tracy Gilliam. They say he was behind bars for failing to register as a sex offender.
Officials have not released the name of the correctional officer, at the request of the officer's family.
The prison is on lockdown. No other information was immediately available.
The Luzerne County District Attorney's Office, Pennsylvania State Police and the correctional facility are investigating.
