More than 30 Arkansas high school students will not get to walk for graduation because of a prank they pulled last weekend, an official said Wednesday.
Osceola Superintendent Michael Cox told KAIT-TV the students went into the school illegally and damaged property. Cox said the students threw cereal in the hallways, trashed other areas and spray-painted walls.
Video obtained by WREG-TV showed peanut butter, eggs and baby powder being thrown all over the school. Some furniture was flipped over and there was urine in the classroom.
"They are going to have to learn they are accountable for their actions," Cox told WREG-TV.
Some Osceola High School students told the station that officials went overboard with the punishment.
“We worked 12 long years not to be able to walk across the stage," one student said. "Just getting the diploma feels good, but I want to walk across the stage also."
Several students went back to the school later Sunday night to clean up the mess. They were at the school until 3 a.m.
"It wasn't nothing you couldn't fix. It wasn't like we went to school and just broke everything," Jamieon Anderson, a senior, told WREG-TV.
Cox said the students are also facing criminal charges. He said if there are no problems leading up to Friday’s graduation, he will press misdemeanor charges.
The students will be notified at a later date to pick up their diplomas.
