Published December 23, 2015

Associated Press

Authorities say a stolen vehicle has crashed head-on into a trolley in Philadelphia, leaving two teens in the car in critical condition and at least two dozen people in the trolley with minor injuries.

Sgt. Eric Gripp of the Philadelphia Police Department says the stolen vehicle smashed into the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority trolley just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the city's Kingsessing section.

SEPTA police chief Thomas Nestel says both occupants of the vehicle were teens.

Gripp says one had to be extracted from the vehicle, and both were taken to hospitals in critical condition.

Television stations showed images of an SUV with its front end smashed and doors ripped off.

SEPTA spokeswoman Heather Redfern says more than 20 trolley passengers were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
