A 50-year-old Massachusetts man was arrested Friday afternoon in connection with a suspicious package found in Boston earlier in the day.
James Derepentigny, of Lawrence, was taken into custody and charged with planting a hoax device hours after he allegedly left a suitcase on a city street Friday morning next to the rear of an SUV owned by the US Department of Homeland Security.
When police arrived to retrieve the suitcase, wires could be seen inside, leading a bomb squad to destroy it in a controlled detonation.
Police did not believe the wires were related to an explosive device, Commissioner William Evans told MyFoxBoston.
Police ordered traffic diverted from the area.
Derepentigny is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
